Assignment: Sympathetic to Unsympathetic

Image result for things fall apart

For a homework assignment the class had to choose 5 characters and choose which was sympathetic to unsympathetic. My 5 characters were Mr. Brown, Nwoye, Unoka, Ezinma, and Okonkwo.
Mr. Brown is the most sympathetic because he makes the effort to understand Igbo culture. However, he is eventually replaced with Reverend James Smith.
Nwoye is the complete opposite from his father, Okonkwo, and is caring. Nwoye is against abandoning twins in the evil forest to be left to die. That is why he begins to follow the Christian church. The missionaries do not believe in killing innocent twins.
Unoka is sympathetic but at the same time he isn't. He has a passion for music and is happy all the time. However, he neglects his family. He is always in debt and therefore, his son Okonkwo has to take care of his family.
Ezinma is not sympathetic. She is Okonkwo's favorite daughter and her mother’s only child. She is a static and flat character because her perspective is not given on issues. We only see her parents’ opinion of her. We don’t actually see how she truly feels.
Okonkwo is the least sympathetic because he will only do what is convenient for him. He focuses more on his image and masculinity than anything else. He displays many characteristics of being a round character. With every chapter, readers learn more about his character. Yet, his character is also static. He makes the same decisions and his mindset never changes.
